Recently, there have been a lot of debate on whether schooling is a scam or not. Different opinions and ideologies have been given and a conclusion hasn't been made yet because some believe school is not scam while others beg to differ. However, let's examine this together. In this post, I'll address this issue, I do hope you read to the end. Now, to the main question: is school really a scam?

Is school really a scam?

There are different reasons why many people believe that "school is a scam". These people believe that school is not providing everything that education represents and entails but rather, it exposes students to set down rules and regulations in the school environment. They believe that school didn't give enough exposure to things outside the four corners of school. This is why many people feel unfulfilled after schooling and cling to the opinion that "school is a scam" because it doesn't teach them the necessary life skill to make them relevant in the society.

Here are some reasons why some believe that "school is a scam":

✓ Exposure to selected ideas: In the regular school setting, there is a set curriculum and syllabus which  the school follows in teaching the students. In most cases, these curriculums and syllabus are not in line with the student's interest and passion. The students are being taught selected topics while the topics needed for the student's development are not taught nor in the school syllabus. The sad thing is that these curriculums and syllabus have been from ages, there are no changes. Just the same pattern! Students are bombarded with theories but hardly are practicals observed. Schools even train students in some fields of study that are not useful after school. This is why many believe school is a scam.

✓ Knowledge is based on class performance and certificate: Passing an examination in school is a test of knowledge. People with good grades are considered as the intelligent ones while those with low grades are considered dull students but this is a total scam because the true test of knowledge is not an examination neither a certificate. Every child is intelligent and each child has their own uniqueness. The fact that a child can't replicate what the teacher taught in school in a examination should not be the determinant that a child is dull but rather that child should be paid attention to and discover what he/she is good at and let there be room for creativity. If a child passion isn't related to what you're teaching, there's big tendency he/she won't do well. Little wonder why many drop out of school and go after their passion. Some even finish school and don't make use of their certificate.

✓ Financial intelligence isn't taught in school: This particular issue is baffling. How will a person spend over 20 years of his/her life schooling and know nothing about how to make, manage and multiply money? Nothing is being taught on how to make money in school and this is one of the reasons people go to school, to make money and a good life for themselves yet nothing is being taught on making money. No financial intelligence! A lot of things taught in school are not even necessary but the necessary ones like financial intelligence is neglected. If there is any place that people should know how to make, manage and multiply money it should be in school but reverse is the case. This is why many graduates feel they wasted their time going to school, just reading and writing exams.

✓ School doesn't help you discover purpose: School should be an avenue to discover one's purpose but it gets more confusing. Majority pass through school and don't even know what they are doing, or what they want to become. Some didn't even choose to be in school, some were forced, many are taking courses they're not passionate about. Little wonder why schools produces millions of graduates annually and most are clueless on what to do and what their contribution to the society is. If only schools helped students discover their purpose, we won't have many liabilities as graduates but problem solvers.

✓ The certificate is not worth the stress: Many believe that the stress that comes with schooling isn't worth it as those that don't have college degree are the ones controlling the world economy today. The likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Kim Kardashian, etc. These ones have made names for themselves in the world using their skills and not a school certificate.

However, we still have another group of people who believe that "school is not a scam". These set of people believe that in school you get to build yourself up right from the foundational level and also that you get to learn the basic and necessary skills for life. They believe that there are great opportunities out there for the educated. They also believe that school plays a vital role in one's life and there are certain life achievements that only a school certificate can make one achieve. Here are some reasons why they believe that "school is not a scam":

✓ More employment opportunities: There are more advantages of getting jobs if one is educated. There are jobs that it's only when you have a college certificate that you can get it. To also secure a well paying job most times, you need to be educated. And you also stand a chance of being considered for a job when you have a higher educational qualification.

✓ Earn a higher income: The higher your educational qualification, the higher your income can be. With an excellent certificate, you stand the chance to get better job offers with high income which an uneducated person can't compete with.

✓ You gain knowledge in school: School is an eye-opener to knowledge. In school, you get to know how to read and write, which is the first step in literacy. Knowing this will go a long way for you because you have an edge in the society. An illiterate can't compete with you in the society because you're most likely able to acquire requisite knowledge that will help you differentiate right and wrong .
