Oh! see the way you look, you're too fat, what are you eating?
Girl!, Aren't you eating? Why do you look so skinny? Gosh!
Dear reader, have you by any chance received such annoying and degrading comments as this? If yes, know that this is nothing less than body shaming. A lot of people have been questioned on how they look, how their body shape is and this has made a lot of people lose confidence in how they look and how their body is shaped. Body shaming has been a consistent concern. What is Body shaming? Body shaming is passing offensive and degrading comments on how a person looks. It's the act of mocking one's physical appearance. Body shaming is not a new trend, it has been from time and there are various ways people have been body shamed. The popular ways people have been body-shamed includes: Fat-shaming, Shaming for thinness, Shaming for height, Shaming of looks e.t.c. Body shaming isn't limited to these forms, it's a lot wider.

There is a stage in one's life that one gets more conscious of their looks and how people think of them, this stage mostly comes during the teenage years, little wonder why quite a number of teenagers and young adults are mostly affected by body shaming. It was recorded that "Suicide" because of body-shaming is the fourth leading cause of death in 15–19-year-olds (Namaste Ki, 1996). However, apart from people body shaming you, you can also body shame yourself unknowingly. This starts when you begin to compare your looks or body with that of others. When you are no longer comfortable in your looks and you start criticizing how you look.

Body shaming is everywhere. Sometimes we practice it unknowingly, for example, calling that your friend fat or tiny, short or tall is nothing less of body shaming. Even though you might not mean it in a bad way, it still falls under body-shaming especially when you talk about it incessantly. Social media hasn't helped matters too, there are various write-ups and drugs produced on weight gain or weight loss,  people no longer feel comfortable in their own body, looks and shape.
However,  the awareness of body-shaming is quite alarming yet good because the world and the people in it need to understand that the way you look should not determine how you live your life. Life is beyond looks and shape. We need to learn how to stop judging people based on their physical appearance. We need to also note that the way people take body-shaming comments differs, we must learn to be conscious of how we pass comments on people's physical appearance.

Dear reader, have you ever been body shamed before or you're still being body shamed?, Know that it's inevitable because some people don't know how to caution themselves in the way they address other's physique but you can always help yourself in being confident in who and what you are. Don't let people's comments get to you. Thrive to see how beautiful and awesome you are and how much you can do with your life beyond what anyone thinks or say.
